The Grenade And The Kids.

The Grenade and the kids.

I’ve just finished a story about 5 little kids and an incident we had with a grenade. We start off on the USS Okinawa LPH (Landing Platform Helicopter). It’s a small WW II aircraft carrier converted as an attack platform for Marine’s. The story proceeds with an assault and personal experiences. This is where I learned not to trust anything/anyone, no matter how innocent the situation looks. There’s humor, suspense, and drama. (Attached is a picture of 4 of the 5 little kids and myself that I talk about).

Ken, you and I had some close calls for sure. Beaver Cage, 1967 didn’t hit 2nd platoon as much as it hit weapons platoon and the CP. July 4th Operation Bear Claw/Buffalo in the DMZ. Our platoon SSgt Malloy and Sgt. Pike were both Killed. They were both our main leaders and now they are dead. August 19th My platoon was completely wiped out when we assaulted a tree line. Sgt. Jones our platoon sergeant was killed. Oct 67 I was over run on Operation Medina. While building C-4 base and running patrols daily 2nd Plt. and Weapon’s got hit with Napalm from our own jets. Then December Operation Napoleon. The battle for C-4 along the South China Sea just about a mile from the DMZ. I know you remember that one. We were both wounded on that one. Our entire Charlie Company went into action. God sure has blessed us and I look forward to finishing 13 months. Semper Fi Bill
